Overview: Zatanna has been living the showbiz lifestyle all of her life. Her father is considered to be one of the greatest magician to have ever lived. A life in the spotlight hasn’t corrupted her. She is extremely caring and frequently donates money to charities as well as playing shows where all the proceeds go to a good cause. Being on stage and performing magic for others brings her a joy that nothing else can even come close to. As long as she can put a smile on someone’s face, she’s satisfied. Despite her kindness, she finds it pretty hard to trust others. The only person she truly trusts is her father. It was no doubt his lessons to never reveal her secrets of magic to anyone that have made her so untrusting. The same message driven home over her entire life is bound to have an affect on her. It also didn’t help that she has spent almost her entire life on the road. Being taught by tutors whilst her father toured, performing with him on stage at night and then finally going on a joint tour with him. They were the best tutors money could buy, so she is pretty intelligent, especially when it comes to languages.
Zatanna is also extremely flirtatious. However, it’s just part of her nature and doesn’t necessarily mean that she’s interested. It is heavily incorporated in her stage persona, but tamer in her private life. She loves to party whenever she can, whether it is some A-lister event where everyone is world famous for one reason or another or some sweaty college dorm room rave with cheap liquor. It often won’t take Zatanna long before she is asked to perform and she’s always happy to do so.
With the disappearance of her father, Zatanna has shown a different side to herself. In the public eye, she does her best not to act like anything is wrong. However, in her private life, she has become much more reckless. She is determined to find him and is certain that someone has taken him. She has been partying harder in the cities she visits, making sure to keep out of the gossip magazines. She is also a lot more emotional, particularly when it comes to anger. Anger at the police for their lack of results, anger at herself for not have being able to prevent her father’s disappearance, and anger at the whole situation in general.Still, whenever possible she tries to maintain the charade that nothing is wrong.
Other Equipment:
- Magic Props: Zatanna always carries around various props with her in the event of an impromptu magic show. Smoke bombs, flash, handcuffs. As well as some other gadgets that assist in her illusions
- Magic Wand: What kind of magician doesn’t have a wand with them? Hers is made of an extremely durable alloy that can deal a decent amount of damage if wielded as a weapon. It can also produce sparks and a small fireball for use on stage.
History
Zatanna was born to Giovanni “John” and Sindella Zatara. When Zatanna was less than a year old, her mother committed suicide, leaving John to raise her by himself. Being an extremely successful magician, he took his young daughter on the road with him, employing a group of nannies to look after her. He had every intention to have her follow in his footsteps and he made sure she did. Rumors say that she was able to shuffle a deck of cards before she could walk. While slightly exaggerated, Zatanna did learn the basics of magic from as soon as she was old enough to understand. Over the years, her skills improved and she eventually was at a level where she would join her father on stage to do a few tricks for the massive, sold out crowds. Being on stage made her happier than she had ever thought possible, like it was a dream, but she knew it was real.
As she grew older, she entered her rebellious stage. In her early teens, she practiced her slight of hand by pickpocketing members of her father’s staff, but promptly returned what she had taken. She knew she was getting better and knew that soon she would be good enough to have her own headlining show. When she approached her father at sixteen with the idea, he had mixed emotions. He was hurt that she wanted to go solo, but was also proud of her skills as well as her ambitions. As a compromise, he decided that they would do a joint tour. She wasn’t just a small opening act, she was to be the joint headline act. He also decided to teach her how to fight. John was quite the skilled martial artist. He told her that sometimes her magic might not be enough and she had to know how to use her fists. Zatanna agreed, the arrangement was good enough for her. The younger audience seemed to prefer Zatanna to her father, well, the row after row of young boys when it was Zatanna’s turn on the stage gave that impression at least. Still, it was clear that they were both happy. She also quickly grew skilled at fighting when the emphasis was put on that when it was clear her magic was impressive enough.
Together they toured around America and occasionally around the world. Zatanna would intensely study languages whenever they visited a foreign country. She had a thirst for knowledge that just couldn’t be quenched when it came to languages. it had started young, when Zatanna and her father would communicate their secrets of magic in a made up language, which was really English in reverse.
Just before Zatanna turned eighteen, her father disappeared without a trace, midway through their tour of America. With only a few dates to go before it was completed, Zatanna knew something was wrong. John wouldn’t disappoint the fans like that. When newspapers caught wind of the story, they thought it to be some kind of publicity act. A magician disappearing, it made sense. However, Zatanna was adamant that something had happened to her father. She went to the police to report him missing and they weren’t able to turn up anything. She was sure that someone had taken him.
Now she has taken to travelling around the country, to the places where she had most recently visited. Using the guise of a repeat performance in all cities, she spends the nights trying to find information about anyone who might have reason to kidnap her father, hiding her identity and using the skills her father has taught her to protect herself. Things have gotten dangerous, but that won’t stop her. With no ransom, her fear is that he is already dead. However, with no ransom, the police aren’t willing to give any more help. Next on the tour schedule, Starling City.
