Overview: Laurel fights for all things justice, trying to see the best in everyone, yet able to recognize the bad guys in order to put them behind bars. Laurel is empathetic, picking up on emotions quite well, often just by watching facial expressions or other body language. This is part of what makes Laurel a great lawyer. At one point in her life, she believed that everything should be by the book, black and white kind of right or wrong. Since the mysterious vigilante has shown up in Starling City, Laurel isn't so sure about her sense of right or wrong anymore. Is it truly wrong if the bad people die? Questions she has found herself asking lately. She is also highly intelligent, sometimes thinking too much for her own good, especially when it comes to men.
From Oliver Queen to Tommy Merlyn, Laurel doesn't attract the most committed men. She wants to find herself in a long-term, committed relationship, but she holds herself back from truly going after it. Between Oliver cheating on her with her younger sister, to her own parents splitting up and never talking to each other again, Laurel is hardly the one to go to for relationship advice. She has no idea how to truly be in a good relationship, but that doesn't stop her from hoping. Maybe Tommy isn't the guy for her, with his own playboy tendencies, but Laurel isn't about to give up on him just yet, or give him her heart fully yet either.

History
My name is Dinah Laurel Lance, though everyone calls me Laurel. Dinah was my mother’s name.I once grew up in one of Sterling City’s most loving families, we had enough money to get by and that’s all that mattered. My father and mother were rock-solid, and though my younger sister and I tried to give them a run for their money, they dealt with us rather quickly. My sister was really the wild-child of the family, though I admit I stepped out at night a few times, but I would have to say that was more from Ollie’s influence. You see, I first met Oliver Queen through school. Our families are from very different financial worlds, but Starling City isn’t all that big and I suppose that made it easier for smart girls to get into more prestigious schools. Anyway, Oliver and I met and we bonded quite quickly.
We were friends for a good bit growing up, not for lack of his trying to rope me into his bedroom of course. However, Ollie had a certain…reputation that I didn’t want to be a part of. There was a time when Oliver swore that his party days were behind him and he was ready for something more committed, and I believed him. We started dating like any normal couple, minus his massive trust fund and fancy cars. I admit, I was a bit taken by it. I was young and what girl didn’t want to live out a princess fantasy? Well, my father wasn’t so impressed by that. Did I mention my father is a detective? My father made me trade toe-shoes for a white belt, enrolling me in Judo classes. They were actually very fun, and something I have kept up on all these years. Not to be arrogant, but I’m a pretty good combatant now.
Back to Oliver, since he’s such a huge part of my history. We were good for a while, it seemed like he actually changed, until that day…
That day… Oliver told me he was going on vacation with his father, some sort of yachting-bonding moment for them. I was thrilled they’d be getting some alone time, Oliver needed to connect with his family on a better level. I tried to see him off, but I had class and couldn’t make it. He was understanding. We’d see each other soon enough. When I went home that day, my little sister, Sara, had gone missing. My father already had the house full of cops, making posters and scanning pictures. You’d think she’d been gone for years, not a few hours. However, my father was always over-protective.
That night, Sara never came home. She never came home the next day either. I don’t know how I was so blinded and didn’t see it, but she was having a relationship with Oliver behind my back. He wasn’t bonding with his father, he was bonding with my sister on that ship. I was angry, I wanted to scream loud enough to shatter the windows, but somehow I held it together. I was going to wait for them to return. I don’t know what I was going to do, I had never willfully hurt anyone in my life, but the thought of yelling at them just didn’t ease my anger. I didn’t have to wait long, when word came back to Starling that the ship had sunk and no bodies were found. We waited for months to hear that a body would wash up on shore, or be found on a nearby island, but it was obvious they were just gone. My sister was dead, all because my boyfriend had to try his luck with her too.
Everything changed after that. My mother left, she couldn’t stand the thought of Sara being dead. My father and I held a service, though there were no remains to bury. I attended the services for Oliver and Robert Queen, but I kept to the back. Facing his mother and sister during that time, it was difficult. I know I was young, but I had been so easily manipulated into believing Ollie’s lies. I never wanted to be in that position again, so I went back to school and got into law school. I became a lawyer and joined a firm that truly helps people.
My life had finally become better, and even Ollie’s best friend, Tommy, helped me keep it that way. We had grown close over the years since Ollie’s death, sometime during that period of time, we found ourselves in a bit of an open relationship. Tommy wasn’t able to commit. For the time being, it worked for us. Until Ollie returned…
In yet another day, my whole life changed. The man I thought had been lost forever returned, but he was different. It didn’t matter to me, I didn’t want to see him, I was still angry. He assured us that he was the sole survivor, Sara was gone for good and there would never be a body to bury.
