Overview: Oliver used to be a spoiled rich boy who would for a time sleep his way through models and anyone who was pretty enough, or drunk enough. He sought nothing but pleasure in his life and used the Queen family’s vast wealth to help himself to whatever he could get. He was a partier, he drank and did drugs and had a number of run-ins with the law. His life started to change when he began dating Laurel Lance, and some maturity started to kick in. Gone were the sheer number of parties and the one night stands, and the drugs. On the road to changing, he relapsed and had a fling with Laurel’s sister Sarah, who died (perhaps?) when he was shipwrecked.
The shock of losing the good life he was starting to have with Laurel, as well as being responsible for the death of her sister, as well as watching his father commit suicide started to change Oliver. While he was on the island he gained training, and went from someone soft into a hardened man. Everything that happened to him pushed him to his limits. He trained, he fought, he nearly died many times. But through all of this he started to find a will to live, a drive and a new purpose in life. He found vengeance and hate, he found a twisted sense of justice where he would become judge, jury, and executioner.

Through all of the hard times he remained who he was, but that was buried by what had come. Through the people he met on Lian Yu he became a machine. He went from a boy who cared about partying and sex to being a man whose whole body was a weapon. He learned how to fight, how to shoot a bow, how to wield knives and swords, and more, including speaking Mandarin Chinese, Russian, and how to hack. He learned how to transform his body from a body into a tool. He truly changed and no longer had any need for the things he had lost, except for his family and friends. He found his sense of duty being a responsibility that was left by his father: clean up the city and make it right again.

Oliver became a serious, determined man, but put up a playboy persona over the top of it to hide who he had become. He carries a new sense of intensity about himself, and a new sense of diligence and responsibility. Even with the attempts to have the playboy persona back, the rest is still apparent, and it is obvious that he’s changed. The parties he attends are now more of the business type, however, and his sleeping around has dropped. He’s trying to fix his fractured life with his friends and family, and make up for past sins. He wants to fix everything that he can, and is willing to put as much work in as he has to with his friends and family, including apologizing to Laurel and offering to leave her life forever if she wants, and trying to set his sister away from her drug and partying ways.

Through all of it, Oliver has come out as an intelligent man, skilled with tactics and observational abilities. He knows how people think, and early on made it so that he was with the police when the Arrow was sighted, thus clearing himself of suspicion due to the timing of his return with the Arrow’s first appearance. He knows how computers and things work and can handle them rather well on his own, including setting up his own computer system in his base of operations. He’s decent with business, not having the gift his parents have, but he’s learning fast. He’s a fast learner after everything that’s happened to him. He’s witty and jokes around, but within reason, always having that air of seriousness under everything. He finds it hard to relax or be himself, even around people he trusts. He still has memories and nightmares about the things that happened, and is very much a scarred man both emotionally and physically. He once had no qualms about killing criminals, but has changed his ways, but he still struggles with it every time. He tries to find a sort of balance between both sides of his life, but is struggling and ending up more reclusive than anything else, and feels like his friends would be better without him, facilitating his semi-permanent move to Gotham on business. He feels that Star City is in good hands for now after the work he’s done, but will go back if need be.

History

Oliver was born to Robert and Moira Queen, who headed Queen Consolidated. As he grew up in a rich household in a life of luxury, he ended up befriending Tommy Merlyn because of the friendship of their parents. The two became close friends and spent a lot of time together. When Tommy’s mother was murdered, his father left Tommy, so the Queens took care of him and the two grew up like brothers, until Tommy’s father returned a few years later and he went home again.
As the two attended school and started to be out more, they became friends with Laurel Lance. From an early age the three of them were close friends, even if Laurel wasn’t of the same social standing as the other two were. Sometime around here, Oliver’s sister Thea was born, and he became an actual brother.

As he grew up and attended high school he started to become a partier. Drinking, drugs, parties, sex, all of this started for Oliver, and he loved it. He was always nagged at by these feelings for Laurel, but he didn’t want any sort of commitments, he just wanted a carefree life that his parents were funding. He tried to hide what he was doing from his parents, especially young Thea, but it would come out eventually. The family also started to pay off anything that happened to him during run-ins with the law, so he could escape any possible jail time.

When he finally started a relationship with Laurel, he found adjusting to be difficult to do, but he tried to make it work. He was slowly becoming ok with this new type of life, with more maturity and the like. But when things started to get too serious for Oliver, he went with his father on the yacht and took Laurel’s sister along. But then something happened, and while they were out at sea, the yacht sunk. Oliver survived, but it appeared that Sarah was lost. He, his father, and one other man survived.

Robert killed the other man and then himself to give Oliver the best chance to survive, and told Oliver to help save the city. Oliver found himself on Lian Yu, where he encountered various people, both allies and foes. He was trained and found a new purpose for his life, to fulfill his father’s dying wish. And after five long years in hell on that island, he finally was rescued.
