Behind his back he’s often known as the guard dog or the Count’s Dog. He is loyal to a fault when it comes to securing the Count’s interest. No one has any question as to whether or not he’s devoted. He would risk anything to protect the count, his own life being viewed as secondary. Artem is an instrument to secure people’s revenge. Instruments and weapons aren’t supposed to fear death.
He’s seen a lot, more than most and so he often has this haunted look in his eyes. But that doesn’t mean he doesn’t know how to have a good time. He can be quite friendly and amicable around people who strike his interest. Normally, however he’s fairly quiet.
When Artem’s on a job he’s dedicated and focused no matter how tedious or inconsequential said job may appear. Every piece plays their part and every task has its role. Therefore each and every one needs to be treated with respect.
As someone who was wronged he believes whole heartedly in the work the Count does. It’s not about making money or unleashing chaos. It’s about helping people who otherwise couldn’t get even an extra nudge in the right direction. They still need to take vengeance themselves; but, they’ll be given the tools. Where they take it from there is up to them.
Most classify him as evil as he’s an enthusiastic supporter of The Count but he cares little for the thoughts of others. He’s found there’s no more pure motivation than revenge and vengeance. And he’s happy to help people get theirs. There are two sides to every story and morals are subjective. In his mind he’s good and doing the right thing no matter how dark the assignment.
Artem isn’t bloodthirsty but he’s by no means afraid to kill. He’s the ruthless sort whose motto is “Get the job done”. He’s perceptive and adaptable, easily able to improvise when things don’t go according to plan. At the end of the day it’s all about the results. He’d rather come back with extra casualties than a failed assignment.
Arrogance is not Artem’s problem. He’s vigilant, aware, and surprisingly cautious for someone in his position with his abilities and youth. And much as some would say he idolize’s The Count, that does not mean he is beyond analyzing his character and critiquing his methods. Often times he feels The Count is too arrogant for his own good. But that is the nature of his boss and father figure so all he can do is try to be more wary on such occasions.
Other Equipment:
- brass knuckles made out of steel
History
All things considered, Artem had a fairly happy childhood. He was born to Lazar and Katerina Kozlov. Sadly his mother died in childbirth. Fortunately neither his father or older sister blamed this on him and did the best they could to make do. His father was a hard worker, often strict and serious but he knew how to kick back and laugh on occasion. His sister Zlata, was a rambunctious, willful girl, who laughed a lot but had a really sharp tongue to match her wit. She was often scolding Father for being “too gloomy”. And she made sure Artem had enough fun in his life. But as light hearted as she could appear she was also perceptive and reliable. Being so much older than Artem, she could be as much a mother figure as a sister one.
Artem did well in school but always preferred running around outside and playing to sitting indoors and studying. He’d wrestle with his friends and typically win, being a very athletic sort. People knew better than to pick on him at school. Some had tried before due to his slim stature but he was lean and quickly showed his would be tormentors how good he was with his fists.
When he was 17 things turned sour. Artem’s father was a lawyer and a good, honest man. To him the integrity of the case and the clients were more important than the money it made him. He lowered his fees as much as he could for those who were too poor for proper representation. And he took on cases less bold men quickly turned away. (This was not to say the results were always favorable. Bribery was a problem; but, he did what he could.)
Unfortunately for the Kozlov family, Lazar irritated the wrong people when he accepted a case prosecuting a local politician for embezzlement before election day. Someone was dispatched to take care of him and as Zlata was visiting Father at the time, she was murdered along with him so that there would be no witnesses. Artem was hanging out with friends at the time so he missed the whole fiasco. But when he came home for dinner he saw their corpses and screamed.
He completely broke down for a time. But eventually he came to his senses and called the police. Then he called Werner Zytle, his sister’s fiancé, to tell him the bad news. He figured it would be best if he heard it from him personally. He doesn’t remember what he said to either the police or The Count. His mind was in a blur.
An uncle took him in; but, Artem just wasn’t sure what to do with himself. The most important people in his life were dead. And there he stood. Living, breathing, and functioning but hollow inside. He didn’t even get the point of eating. He mostly ate just so that uncle he’d barely seen before would leave him alone.
Two days after the murders it was announced the charges were being dropped against the politician and he could continue to run in the election. Artem despaired, understanding what it meant but being powerless to do anything about it.
Not long after that The Count approached Artem and offered him the opportunity for revenge. He gladly accepted. With The Count’s help he managed to kill the politician and those responsible for his father’s and older sister’s deaths.
The Count brought purpose and meaning back to Artem’s life. Revenge satiated, he still didn’t want to leave him. He was determined to help The Count however he could. He left his uncle without so much as a goodbye and has been a faithful follower ever since, doing any odd job The Count asks of him.
