Overview:
Simply put Marigold is a disillusioned detective. She is well aware of Starling City’s corruption. She always keeps her eyes and ears open, looking for the truth. However, she knows that odds are good if the wealthy is connected to a crime their part will entirely be overlooked due to some well placed funds. The people who will most likely be punished are the desperate and the hopeless. As disgruntled as she is with this setup, there’s little she can do about it. She doesn’t have the money to go head to head with the rich and the police employ her and pay her bills. And there’s an abundance of dirty cops. She’s currently trying to work out who is in whose pocket but there’s so much scandal it’s difficult to figure out who bought off who.
As disillusioned as Marigold is and as prone to fits of depression as she is, overall she does not have a defeatist personality. She believes those who don’t strive for change don’t have a right to complain. So she works as a detective and does the best she can to taper off the corruption and make sure the right people get the right information.
Given her childhood she understands that desperate people do desperate things. She doesn’t agree with the harsh punishments the law demands for poor people caught stealing. Such people need help not prison time. She’s absolutely disgusted that poor people who seal limited funds get more jail time than the rich with scandals costing people hundreds of thousands of dollars.
She believes education should be prioritized more than it is in Starling City. The only way anyone in the Glades will have a future is if they get proper schooling. But most people there aren’t adequately educated. Their school system is dreadful and plenty don’t even attend. Either they aren’t given proper incentive, are fed up with the joke schools, or are too busy trying to make extra cash since their parents typically can’t or don’t feed them.
Other Equipment:
- guns supplied by the police
- badge
- notebook always on her person
History
Originally Marigold lived in the nice part of Starling City. Her father was well to do. Her mother was a glorified housewife. She was a much loved little girl, the apple of her parents’ eye. Mother adored dressing her up in pretty gowns and brushing her hair to display “her little princess”. Father cared more about making sure Marigold was educated and clever. He read her stories before she could read and taught her that knowledge is power and that she should always seek out the truth.
When she was three her mother gave birth to the twins Elizabeth (who Marigold quickly nicknamed Izzy) and Jamie. Marigold was delighted to have two little siblings to play with, not being the jealous sort when their family had so much.
Disaster struck when Marigold turned five. Father had always been extremely close with her uncle, his younger brother. He was shot during a robbery and Father fell apart. He turned to drugs and gambling to forget and soon their wealth was a thing of the past. Mother up and left before they lost everything, never giving the children so much as a second look.
Distraught by the loss of his wife in addition to the loss of his brother, Father’s depression grew worse and his methods of coping more severe. Before long the family had to move to the Glades. And as Father was hardly looking out for the children anymore it became Marigold’s job to make sure everyone was fed. The twins didn’t understand what was happening. Honestly, Marigold didn’t really get it but she was the older sister and as Father wasn’t looking after anyone, she figured it was her responsibility to somehow make ends meet.
She made sure everyone went to school. School would be the only way her and her siblings would have any sort of future. And as for money for food, she did what she could. She became quite the nimble pickpocket. A young girl like her couldn’t legally work and she was fearful of many of the jobs people would pay her to do. But when she was more desperate she would do those too. Her younger brother and sister needed food. And Father wasn’t providing. She didn’t try and claim neglect, worrying that an orphanage would be even worse than what they had. And for a while she clung to the hope that Father would recover.
Marigold hated breaking the law but she did what she must and resolved to stop when she could. She wanted to help people, make a difference. She studied hard in school and managed to get a scholarship so she could attend a local college. She took part time jobs to help herself and her siblings.
Now after training, Marigold is a police detective. She hopes to do what she can to stem corruption and help those forced to commit crimes out of desperation.
